OT: Thoughts on the EV HR4020?

They are HUGE......5X" deep, about 2 feet high, and 4 feet wide. How would they do in a living room? Would it be anything like listening to a large WE horn? Supposedly Altec drivers will bolt up.

I'm now the owner of a pair......... No drivers, Though.

Re: OT: Thoughts on the EV HR4020?

I guess my question on it sounding like an old WE horn is pretty foolish, considering it is supposed to be crossed over at 300hz, and uses a compression driver, not a 15" cone driver. Still, my thought would be to try it full range and see what happens...... in the livingroom, I wouldn't need to push much of any power. Unfortunately, I don't have good diaphragms in my 291's.

Here is the link to the documentation:

Not sure full range is a good idea. Below the horn cutoff, which admittedly may be as low as 180Hz or thereabouts, the driver diaphragms will be unloaded. If you try it, start with very little power.

Regardless of acoustic load, the driver's diaphragm is not capable of the excursion required for linear acoustic output in the lowest octaves.

For a given diaphragm diameter and given SPL, excursion increases by the inverse square of the frequency which is a larger increase than the commonly parroted and incorrect claim that for each halving of frequency the excursion doubles.

In the OP's case i'd wager that diaphragm failure would be the very next loudness increment or two above "hey, i can actually hear bass coming from these".

He might get some interesting crunching noises for a while first.

i can tell you from first hand experience that the sound made by the dome impacting the phase plug is both unpleasant and of a significant magnitude.

IMHO a horrible idea in a living room ..not just a bad one. Tight pattern 40x20 horn designed to punch to the back of a big hall.

    Look at HR4090 instead.

Even so, it's not gonna be full range. You will have no bass at all. On the order of 20 dB down where you need the most power.

How is it any different that 203B's that are supposed to sound pretty good?

Well, If I run across them...... I wasn't actually looking for horns, I was looking at ladders! I'm into these horns cheaply enough that if they prove to be unusable, to me, it won't be a big deal......... It won't be the first time I've bought something because it looked cool. Remember those Butterfly horns I bought? I ended up giving those away!

Same caveats apply. By virtue of their "dual axis'" the 203's are only half as bad.

OG didn't say they'd sound bad. But, in any normal size listening room there will be a very small sweet spot, like maybe even smaller than ideal for a dedicated listening position.

I wouldn't advise anybody to run 203's full range either.
One. tight horns are compromised in a small room.
Two, running below cutoff opens not one but several cans of worms,

You might be able to aim those and use them for their designed purpose. But full range is gonna result in bad sound and blown drivers.
